How Sand Sticks

Sand and water is all it takes - The key is how the sand is compacted.

There are many ways to compact sand, however we use a simple formwork and common construction compactors to do the job. A formwork is built and then filled in stages with sand. Each new layer of sand is compacted and the process repeats until the form is completely full. Once filled, the formwork can be removed revealing a solid "block" of densely compacted sand and sculpting can commence.

Procedure for an Event

We typically sculpt through an event as "performing artists".This arrangement draws the most attention from patrons or media and allows them to view the process, progress, and eventually the finished sculpture.

Setup and initial sculpting generally begins prior to an event providing media with visuals to focus on leading up to the event's opening.

Interactive Features

In addition to live "performance art" , our sculpting days are filled with demonstrations of sand sculpture techniques, explanations of the process and answering any and all questions from the public or media.

Interactive features such as adjoining kids sandboxes, Where's Waldo style games based on off-topic items sculpted into the sand sculpture, competitions and special effects can be integrated into any project.

Sand Sculpture Sizes

A sand sculpture looks best when it is not dwarfed by the space that it inhabits. With indoor projects this can vary in relation to floor space, or ceiling height. Subject matter also has an effect on the composition of the finished sculpture. For instance, a 50 ton sculpture of a cathedral would be considerably taller than a 50 ton sand sculpture of an automobile.

Weather and Sand Sculpture

Completing a sculpture in inclement weather is when Sandscapes experience shines. Over time wind and rain can erode a sculpture. Severity of the weather and the type of sand used determine the protective measures we employ. But rest assured, with Sandscapes the project will be finished superbly.

Site Selection

A site can be nearly anywhere, but a few considerations should be taken. Access to the site for materials deliveries, the type of surface at the site and the existence of any rooms, tunnels or substructures underneath the site are the primary concerns.

Subject Matter

Wildlife, fairy tales, celebrity likenesses or even, yes, castles. Our sand sculptures are custom tailored to the theme of your event with a subject matter of your choice. You may also choose to have a sponsor's corporate logo accurately sculpted into the sculpture.

In addition to numerous National, International, and Regional titles, Sandscapes holds 12 separate World Sand Sculpting Championships titles. Averaging 40 sand sculptures annually, our sculptors have created sculptures of every imaginable subject matter at major venues around the world.
